Tony Alva started on either Dogtown or Zephyr skateboards and then launched his own brand of boards called Alva. This was an important moment in the history of skateboarding because it was the first time a pro skater launched a skate company. At the time Tony Alva was a popular icon and it worked well for the Alva Brand. Today you can see that most of the successful skateboard brands have also been launched by pro skaters. It seems to be the formula that works.
