Eric Koston

Eric Koston was born on April 29, 1975 in Bangkok, Thailand, but he didn’t live long outside of the United States. His family moved to Los Angeles, California when he was only eight months old. He began skating at age eleven after his brother gifted him with an old board. He practiced every day in his driveway, quickly learning ollies and heelflips. Eric learned he might be good enough to make a living from skateboarding when he was invited by skateboarding pro Eddie Elguera to teach at a summer skateboarding camp when he was only 14 years old. He dropped out of high school after that summer and moved to San Diego to skateboard full-time.

He quickly learned his strength was in street skating. Eric Koston was not afraid to combine his technical skills and daring to attempt untested tricks during competitions. His signature move is the crooked grind, later nick-named the “K grind” after Koston. He was the first to show off this trick in a video. He did not create this trick, but there is an impressive collection of tricks that are to his name, including the nollie flip noseslide and the switch kickflip backside tailside.

Eric Koston was first sponsored in 1991 and turned professional in 1993. His career took a leap in 2000 as his hard work won him competition after competition until 2005. He went on to win many distinguishing gold medals at many events including the Globe World Contest, the X Games and the Gravity Games. He is featured in Tony Hawk’s Underground video game released in 2003. In 2005, he earned a place on Thrasher Magazine’s “15 Most Loved Skaters of All Time.” Eric also designed his own line of shoes from éS Footwear. This company and Eric sponsored the éS Game of S.K.A.T.E. in the summer of 2005, which provided a chance for amateur skaters to be recognized and compete in San Diego against skaters from other parts of the world.

In 2006, Eric Koston and éS Footwear Parted Ways. He is still the co-owner of Fourstar Clothing, a company he helped found when he turned pro in 1993. His current sponsors are Girl Skateboards, Fourstar, Independent, Active, Spitfire, and Diamond, though his biggest sponsor was éS Footwear before they parted ways. Outside of skating, Eric enjoys golf and basketball. He was married in 2007 and is still happily married.
